The Community Farm
The Community Farm, located on Old Center Road in St. Johnsbury, teaches gardening skills and provides fresh vegetables to area food shelves. In order to successfully operate the farm, we seek volunteers to fill the following positions:
Volunteer Gardener
Purpose of the Position: The goal of the community farm is to put fresh vegetables in the hands of community members, especially those who might otherwise have a hard time accessing fresh food. In order to fulfill our mission, we need to plant, weed, water and maintain a vibrant thriving garden and we need volunteer gardeners to do that!Responsibilities & Duties: Plant, weed, water, harvest, or participate in other garden tasks as directed.
Qualifications: No gardening experience necessary! Just a willingness to participate in gardening tasks and ability to follow basic instructions.
Commitment Expected: Not everyone can offer the same time commitment. Whether you can come only once or twice seasonally or can commit to a regular schedule, we welcome you. Volunteers who can come regularly (such as twice a month or weekly) are particularly welcome as this allows us to train you fully and ensures that the veggies are tended as well as possible.
Garden Mentor
Purpose of the Position: One way to enhance access to fresh food is to empower people to grow their own. Garden Mentors provide guidance to those new to gardening so that they can take those skills with them wherever they go.
Responsibilities & Duties: Willingness to work one on one with an individual or to assist when groups such as students come to the farm to help garden.
Qualifications: Gardening experience and an ability to direct others in a friendly and supportive manner.
Commitment Expected: Garden Mentors must commit to regularly coming to the garden, either weekly or twice a month.
The Board
The board is a group of volunteers dedicated to the mission of St. J ALFA and to making the organization sustainable. The following positions work directly with the board.
Board Member
Purpose of the Position: To help ensure a sustainable future for St. J ALFA through ethical governance and fundraising.
Responsibilities & Duties: Attend monthly board meetings and assist with fundraising. Fundraising has primarily occurred through special events like Empty Bowls and grant writing. Participate in a committee.
Qualifications: While certain kinds of experience are helpful, the most important piece is a willingness to participate and the responsibility and dedication to follow through with tasks. Experience in event planning, public relations, marketing, farming, and fundraising are all helpful but not necessary.
Commitment Expected: Board members are expected to come to most board meetings and to assist with fundraising. A commitment of one year is expected. This position usually requires two to five hours a month.

Purpose of the Position: To assist with the planning and development of special events, workshops, and fundraising events.
Responsibilities & Duties: To assist with events. Specific duties may include: brainstorming/visioning, creating marketing materials to promote the event, coordinating with community members to line up resources needed for the event, set up/clean up day of event, etc.
